Make no mistake, if you’re doing any kind of business online, you need to protect your business information. Unfortunately, a lot of small business people didn’t get the memo on this. It’s easy to see why. A lot of them are simply too busy trying to keep their head above water. Believe me, I understand.
But here’s the problem. It really would suck for you to build up a small empire through your hard work and sweat only to see it go up in smoke because you overlooked small business security. Yes, this is a thing.
Email phishing, e-commerce fraud, viruses, data theft – the list goes on and on. First, before computers, it was smashing windows or shoplifting that was the only small business security issues; now thanks to technology there are just so many different areas and aspects to watch. Symantec are blocking 480,000 attacks per year from one specific threat.
Unfortunately, a lot of small business people are too eager to simply treat it as an afterthought. It’s one of those things that they say they will get to once they have the time. Well here’s the problem. Just like with anything else you plan in life like diets or any kind of self improvement or self help, tomorrow never comes.
But when tomorrow does happen, you have so many duties, responsibilities, and obligations that you don’t know where to start. Once you get started on the things that you think you must do, it’s only a matter of time until you lose the time, effort, and motivation to do what you should do.
In fact, if you ask the average person if they can produce a list of the things they should do, they would probably come up with a very long list. These are things like losing weight, investing in their mind, in their relationships, spend more time relaxing, improving their education; I can go on and on. The list is extremely long if not limitless.
But here’s the problem. People rarely bother with that list. They’d rather focus on the things they must do. These are the things that they feel that they have to do on a day to day basis otherwise they’re not going to continue living.
Well, business people think this way as well. There are certain things that you feel that you must do. This involve paying your bills, handling your receivables, taking care of your supplies, handling your vendors, talking to customers, finding customers. Again, the list can go on and on.
In fact, for the typical business owner, the list can very well be endless. But here’s the problem. If you’re able to knock out all the things that you must do, it’s too easy to just lose sight of the things that you should do. So you get stuck. Your business doesn’t grow.
Make no mistake, the moment you start thinking about small business IT security is the moment your business will start going to the next level. That is not an exaggeration. That is not a guess. That is not a hypothesis nor is it hype.
This is the absolute truth. Why? When you start thinking about things like small business security, you start thinking about your should do list. In other words, you shifted your mindset. You no longer obsess about the day to day survival issues.
Instead, you’re looking at the big picture. This is a tremendous step forward. In fact, it’s a big leap forward for many business people. Now you may be thinking to yourself, “Why should I think that way when I’m making the exact money today as yesterday? Shouldn’t I just focus on the things that will make me money today?”
